Abstract
Prevention and home care are the two cornerstones of the new direction of the Italian Society of Nephrology (SIN), in line with the provisions of the PNRR-M6 and the therapeutic innovations that are radically changing nephrology clinical practice. With regard to the home dialysis treatment, primary objective of SIN is to revive the use of peritoneal dialysis (PD) in Italy. This is a hospital-based treatment delivered to the patient’s home. Compared to hemodialysis, PD is equally effective but certainly superior in terms of quality of life, and it allows significant savings in human and financial resources for healthcare systems while protecting our planet in terms of water and electricity consumption and CO2 emissions. Despite the unquestionable advantages, PD remains largely underutilized. The General Assembly on Peritoneal Dialysis, held in Rome on the occasion of World Kidney Day on 12 March 2026, had the ambition of elevate attention of citizens and Health Institutions on PD which is now considered “dominant” over hemodialysis.
