Protetto: Professor Ferdinand Démant (1911-1988). A Founder of the European Society for Pediatric Nephrology

Abstract

Ferdinand Démant was one of the most prominent pioneers in pediatrics in Eastern Slovakia, specifically in Košice, after World War II. He was highly active as a physician, general pediatrician, pediatric nephrologist, organiser, scientist, and teacher. He showed excellent organisational skills, which he used to work on building a network of pediatric wards in district hospitals and thus contributed significantly to improving the quality of pediatrics in Eastern Slovakia. His foundational work in pediatric nephrology continues to resonate in modern clinical practice, particularly in the context of timely diagnosis and personalised treatment of congenital kidney disorders in children. Démant was one of the enthusiastic pediatricians who supported the founding of the European Society for Pediatric Nephrology and was involved in its formation as a co-founder.
