Figure 13. Surgeon William (Jim) Dempster (1918-2008) of the Hammersmith and St Marys hospitals in London is on the right in this picture. He studied rejection from 1951 to 1957 at the RC Surgeons lab at Downe in Kent, UK. He published more than 100 papers on the subject, confirming that the reaction was cell-mediated, although antibodies were still allowed a role.
