Figure 1. Saints Cosmas and Damian (3rd century CE) and the miracle of the transplantation of the “black leg”. More than 80 versions of this miracle occur in churches in Europe (1). This one, from the brush of Fra Angelico (c1387-1455) dates from 1442 and is to be found in the Museo San Marco in Florence.
