Protetto: Ibn al-Jazzār’s Medical Contributions to Urinary System Disorders in Medicine for the Poor and Destitute

Abstract

This article explores the urinary system treatments presented in Ibn al-Jazzār’s Medicine for the Poor and Destitute (Tibb al-Fuqarāʾ wa-l-Masākīn), a significant 10th-century medical work aimed at providing healthcare guidance to poor populations. Through detailed textual analysis, we examine al-Jazzār’s approach to kidney and bladder conditions, focusing on his recommendations for common urinary ailments including kidney pain, bladder pain, urinary tract ulcers, stones, dysuria, incontinence, hematuria, and bedwetting. The study reveals that al-Jazzār’s work functions primarily as a practical recipe book with direct, accessible treatments intended for those without physician access, containing minimal theoretical content and only one invasive procedure (bloodletting from popliteal veins). We compare his methods with contemporaneous works, particularly those of Rhazes (al-Rāzī), highlighting significant differences in approach despite both texts targeting similar audiences. The Greek-Roman influences are evident in al-Jazzār’s two explicit citations of Dioscorides and Andromachus, demonstrating the transmission of classical pharmaceutical knowledge into medieval Islamic medicine. Notably, al-Jazzār frequently attributes controversial treatments to some physicians rather than claiming them as his own, suggesting a cautious approach to certain remedies. This research contributes to our understanding of medical knowledge transmission in medieval Islamic medicine and illuminates a distinct genre of healthcare literature developed for populations with limited access to professional medical care. These historical remedies demonstrate early approaches to accessible, non-invasive urinary treatments that parallel contemporary interest in cost-effective traditional medicine, particularly relevant for modern low-resource healthcare settings.
